Unit 1 Instructor

Sophear Pel

Sophear Pel

Sophear was born in Battambang Province, Cambodia and immigrated to the U.S. in 1990. She has incredible voice and won first place in several singing competition Long Beach. She later starred in the movie The Golden Voice (2006) as Serey Sothear Ros-Khmer legendary singer. She also played in a feature film, Two Shadows (2012).

She is very passionate about Khmer language and studied Khmer mainly on her own with her parent until she is able to read and write fluently. Sophear received her bachelor of science from CSULB and has been working as a computer technician in Long Beach. Read more about her detail interview here.

Phylypo Tum

Phylypo Tum

Phylypo was also born in Battambang Province, Cambodia. He and his family came to US in 1989 as refugees. Phylypo went to elementary school in Cambodia and continue up to high school in Khao-I-Dang Thailand camp before he came to the U.S.  

After he got his B.S. from UCLA, Phylypo was very involved with the Cambodian community in Long Beach volunteering especially with Cambodian New Year events. Phylypo got his M.S. in computer science from CSULB and currently working at an investment firm in Los Angeles as a software engineer.


Unit 2 Instructor

Kunneary Lao

Khunneary Lao

Kunneary was born in Svay Rieng Province, Cambodia. She lived in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia for many years after the Khmer Rouge. She taught at Sdao Konlaeng elementary school in Khom Dey Eet, Keansvay District, Kondarl Province from 1979 to 2001. She received her high school diploma from Tuol Svao Prey High School.

She loves Khmer classical songs especially from 1960s by Sin Sisamouth and Ros Serey Sothear. Kunneary currently volunteers to oversee the Khmer music compilation program at Mietophoum Library in Long Beach.
